Therapeutic Jaw Botox

Where It Hurts Decides
Which Muscle We Treat

Not a cosmetic procedure, but a treatment
based on examination results.
We first confirm which muscle is painful.

Diagnosis First

Five Examinations Before the Injection

Not all jaw pain comes from the muscles We first confirm whether an injection is needed

01

TMJ X-ray

Checking bone and joint structure

02

Quantitative Bite Force Measurement

Left-right balance of biting force, in numbers

03

Head & Neck Muscle Palpation

Mapping the painful muscles

04

Shimstock 8μm Occlusal Test

Detecting subtle premature contacts

05

Tooth Wear Assessment

Reviewing the record of accumulated force

Why Dentist

Jaw Botox — Why at a Dental Clinic?

Botox is familiar as a dermatology or plastic
surgery procedure. But the target of jaw botox is
not the skin — it is the chewing muscles and jaw function.

1

The target is not the skin, but the chewing muscles

The masseter, temporalis, and medial pterygoid that jaw botox addresses are the muscles of mastication. Dentistry is the field that works with these muscles, the jaw joint, and the bite every day.

2

We measure your biting force before the procedure

With exams that assess chewing function — quantitative bite force measurement, tooth wear assessment, muscle palpation — we can first judge whether the procedure is actually needed.

3

There is a next step after lowering the force

After the injection lowers the force, protecting the teeth with a stabilization splint and managing the cause with physical and exercise therapy all continue in one place.

4

We can reach the muscles inside the mouth

The medial pterygoid, involved in deep pain in front of the ear and inside the jaw and in limited mouth opening, must be accessed from inside the mouth — an area a dental setting is equipped to handle.

5

A legally recognized area of dental practice

Botulinum toxin treatment of the jaw and facial area by dentists is an area of practice recognized by a Supreme Court of Korea ruling (2016).

At our hospital, Dr. Yuseong Kim, Hospital Director,
Clinical Professor at Yonsei University and board-certified
prosthodontist, joins in on bite analysis and combined splint planning.

Combined care

Usually none (stand-alone)

a different muscle needs attention

Masseter

Masseter

The muscle responsible for strong biting force

Pain along the side of the jaw and cheeks, often related to clenching and grinding.

Temporalis

Temporalis

The muscle that closes the mouth and pulls the jaw

Can appear as throbbing headache-like pain around the temples.

Medial Pterygoid

Medial pterygoid

A deep muscle that closes the jaw and moves it sideways

Related to deep pain in front of the ear and inside the jaw, and to limited mouth opening. This muscle requires access from inside the mouth.

Two Roles

Botox Lowers the Force,
The Splint Protects the Teeth

They are not substitutes — their roles differ.
When grinding or clenching has already worn the teeth,
an injection alone cannot protect them.

1

Tooth Wear

An accumulated record showing how much force your jaw has been producing over time.

2

Bite Force Measurement

We confirm, in numbers, where the force is currently concentrated.

3

Botulinum Toxin

It lowers the intensity of the force a muscle produces. However, it does not remove the biting habit itself.

4

Occlusal Stabilization Splint

It spreads the remaining force widely and keeps the teeth from striking each other directly.

Why We Plan Them Together

Botulinum toxin reduces the amount of force, and the stabilization splint protects the teeth. Depending on your exam results, some patients are managed with the splint alone, while others have both planned together.

Process

This Is How We Proceed

01

Five Examinations

TMJ X-ray, bite force measurement, muscle palpation, shimstock occlusal test, and wear assessment confirm the source of the pain first.

02

Choosing Target Muscles & Dosage

Based on tender points and the left-right bite force difference, we decide which of the temporalis, masseter, or medial pterygoid to treat, and at what dosage.

03

Injection

We treat only the muscles indicated by the exam findings. When needed, a stabilization splint and physical therapy are planned alongside.

04

Follow-Up & Re-Evaluation

We recheck your symptoms and exam findings, then set the next plan. Whether to repeat is decided by how you progress.

Botulinum toxin is not covered by insurance. Its effect is not permanent, and how long it lasts varies from person to person. Effects, limits, and possible reactions are all explained before the procedure.

Honest Guide

What We Always Tell You Before the Procedure

We believe knowing the limits first is the start of a good decision

The effect is not permanent

Muscle function returns over time, and how long the effect lasts varies from person to person. We do not plan on indefinite repetition — appliance and exercise therapy manage the underlying cause alongside.

Chewing strength may weaken temporarily

Because the treatment lowers biting force, the strength to chew hard foods may be temporarily reduced in the early period after the injection.

Changes in facial expression have been reported

Though rare, effects on nearby muscles have been reported. All possible reactions are explained before the procedure.

Some patients are not candidates

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, neuromuscular conditions, and similar situations may exclude the procedure. We review this together during your consultation.

We do not promise contour changes

Therapeutic treatment aims at pain relief and functional recovery. Changes in appearance vary greatly between individuals and are not something we can assure.

“Botulinum toxin is only one way of lowering muscle force. Only when occlusion and appliances are considered together can lowering the force lead on to a plan that protects the teeth and the joint.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Will jaw botox make my TMJ pain go away?

Botulinum toxin is a treatment that lowers the force produced by the chewing muscles. It can help when muscle overactivity contributes to the pain, but not all TMJ pain comes from the muscles. That is why we do not recommend the injection first — we confirm where the pain comes from through examinations, and use it only when needed. Effects and limits are explained before the procedure.

How long does the effect last? Do I need to keep repeating it?

The effect of botulinum toxin is not permanent — muscle function returns over time, and how long it lasts varies from person to person. We do not plan on indefinite repetition. Instead, we manage the underlying cause with a stabilization splint and exercise therapy, aiming to reduce dependence on injections.

Are there any side effects?

Temporary weakening of chewing strength and possible changes in facial expression have been reported, so we explain all possible reactions before the procedure. Conditions that may exclude the procedure — such as pregnancy, breastfeeding, or neuromuscular disorders — are also reviewed during consultation. Your progress is checked together at follow-up visits.

Will jaw botox make my face look slimmer?

The goal of our care is pain relief and recovery of chewing function; we do not set the injection sites or dosage to change facial contour. As the chewing muscles become less active, some people notice a change in appearance, but this varies greatly between individuals and is not something we can promise. If cosmetic results are your main interest, please let us know during consultation.
